Dengue fever is caused by a bite of an infected mosquito. Its symptoms are flu-like, where victims usually feel feverish, severe headache, muscle pains, nausea, and vomiting. Signs of rashes are also present. Dengue usually lasts up to 10 days to a month for a full recovery. However, if not treated immediately, dengue can be life threatening. Because of this, it is better to know the ways on how to avoid dengue fever than to wait for it to infect you.
However, in order to fully understand the ways and means on how to avoid dengue fever, you must have the necessary information on how dengue infects people. Dengue usually occurs in tropical countries like Philippines, Venezuala and Mexico. It is transmitted and spread by infected mosquitoes that bite during the day. These mosquitoes are usually found around stagnant water. Thus, reports of dengue typically increase during the monsoon season.
Knowing this vital information will give you the necessary knowledge to learn how to avoid dengue fever.
Mosquito repellent. Use mosquito repellents on your skin and, if possible, put some on your clothing as well. This is to ensure that mosquitoes won’t bite through the cloth.
Clothing and mosquito net for protection. If you’re traveling outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants as much as possible. This minimizes the area of exposed skin, vulnerable to mosquito bites. Use a bed net or a mosquito net if you’re sleeping in an open and non-air conditioned area.
Remove any stagnant water resources. Change the water (or remove if not needed) in flower pots or any containers (E.g. buckets, canisters, water barrels and discarded tires) with water at least once a week. Stored water should be covered in a sealed tight lid. This is to ensure that dengue carrying mosquitoes won’t breed in that area.
Those are just some of the things that we can do to avoid Dengue fever from infecting us. If you have children at home, be sure to educate them as well regarding this deadly disease and teach them the proper ways of prevention as mentioned above.
