How to Prevent Influenza

Influenza is a viral infection of the respiratory system that is easily transmissible especially if you don’t have a strong immune system. High fever, muscle ache, headache, cough and sore throat are the most common manifestations of influenza and usually, they last for about a week or more if not given proper treatment. Influenza or more commonly known as flu can be mild or severe and sadly, it can also lead to death. To avoid such, it is best to be aware of how to prevent influenza because time and again, prevention is always better than cure.

Vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that there are over 200,000 Americans who suffer from flu every year. Unfortunately, about 36,000 Americans die due to influenza. The good news is, influenza can be prevented and one of the most effective ways is to receive the flu vaccine. It can be administered either through flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine. Flu vaccine varies every year because the strain of the virus is different every season so the vaccine needs to be adjusted. Those who are at high risk of infection with flu and those who are prone to get complications if infected by the influenza virus are highly recommended to get vaccinated.

Proper hygiene. Good hygiene is another effective way to prevent influenza. Because the influenza virus is highly contagious and is airborne, it can easily be passed to another person even through coughing. Direct contact like shaking hands or kissing is another way to get infected by the virus. If you practice good hygiene, you can help prevent the spreading of the virus. You should cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.  Washing your hands frequently is a simple good hygiene but it could go a long way. Use soap and water when washing your hands for about 15 to 30 seconds.  Anti-bacterial hand gels can be used in the absence of soap and water.

Healthy living. And what better way to prevent influenza than to live a healthy lifestyle. Eating fruits and vegetables can really help prevent influenza. Studies show that green, red and yellow fruits and vegetables are rich in phytochemicals that can help prevent influenza. According to discovery Health, you should also keep your immune system healthy and strong to better fight off influenza viruses. Sleep deprivation can weaken the immune system so always get adequate sleep like six to eight hours every night. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day can also do wonders to your health. See Benefits of Drinking Plenty of Water. Avoid smoking and as much as possible do not stress yourself. See How to Kick the Smoking Habit. You should also exercise on a regular basis to keep your body healthy.

Anti-viral drugs. Aside from vaccine and good hygiene, another effective way on how to prevent influenza is the use of anti-viral drugs. These drugs can lower your risks by 70-90%. However, antiviral drugs have side effects like nausea, vomiting, irritability, depression and difficulty in sleeping.  So take anti-viral drugs only upon doctor’s advice.
